Highway 221 Bypass Project

Fast Facts

NCDOT TIP #: R2233BA
Project Type: Road widening
Affected Counties
: Rutherford
Estimated Cost:
$126,373,000

Description

Part of a larger project to create a four-lane road from the South Carolina state line to I-40 in Marion, the Rutherford Bypass will eventually be an 8-mile stretch of four lane road. This part of that larger project stretches almost four miles from US 74 to just south of Charlotte Road (US Hwy 221 Alternate).

The current roadway for this section alternates between two and four lanes. NCDOT plans to make the entire stretch a four-lane divided highway with grass medians and paved shoulders where possible. Unfortunately, widening and altering the road will affect many property owners along the project path.

In fact, more than 90 properties will experience an eminent domain taking for this project, and some properties stand to lose substantial land. With the accompanying drainage and utility work, property owners may find themselves uncomfortably close to more traffic and more noise, and businesses may find their parking lots and access negatively impacted.

This part of the project has a projected budget of more than $126 million, of which the NCDOT has set aside nearly $15 million to compensate affected property owners.

There are only a handful of attorneys in NC who practice eminent domain exclusively, and even fewer with NCDOT experience. We have several. That’s why its worth getting in touch with us for a free case evaluation.

Here’s how it works:

1) Tell us about your situation.

2) We research your property as needed, using DOT maps, our own technology, and experience to see the exact effects.

3) We let you know what we think a fair offer would be. This evaluation is free, and there’s no
pressure or obligation to hire us after.

But please don’t wait to act. Waiting can hurt your case, and the cost is the same: free.
