Description

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) plans to upgrade US 70 to a freeway from US 70 Business to the Neuse River in Wilson’s Mills. This five-mile project will have two intersections on US 70 – one at Swift Creek Road (SR 1501) and another at Wilson’s Mills Road (SR 1903). The current intersections and median openings that provide direct access to US 70 from adjacent properties will close and property access adjacent to US 70 will be via new service roads.

US 70 is a major east-west corridor from Raleigh to Morehead City and cities and towns between. It is heavily used by freight traffic and connects travelers and military personnel to two military bases. It is also a major hurricane evacuation route and the route many vacationers take to the beaches.

Safety has been a concern along this particular portion of US 70. The fatal crash rate for this section is higher than the statewide average for similar roadways and facilities. The purpose of this project is to improve safety and enhance mobility.

The federal surface transportation reauthorization, entitled Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act or the “FAST Act” was signed into law in 2015. The law designates US 70 from I-40 to the port at Morehead City as a future interstate highway. Improvements proposed as part of this project are compatible with this plan to upgrade US 70.
